As a Black femme lesbian psychotherapist, author, and public speaker, my work is rooted in the unshakeable beliefs that we innately resist that which tries to suppress our inner light and that most people have the capacity to change.
My approach to relationship psychotherapy is informed by the study of Western and Black psychology, critical clinical social work, as well as West African and Afro-Latino spiritual traditions. That said, I work with people who have any or no religious or spiritual practices.
As an internationally known expert on QTIPOC mental health and well-being, I have spoken about my work and my writing on several podcasts and at conferences and community events in North America and in the United Kingdom.
In addition, I’ve published both academic and creative nonfiction since the late 1980s. My creative work can be found various print and online literary magazines. My academic work includes several academic journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. My co-edited volume (with Dr. Jonathan Mathias Lassiter), Black LGBT Health in the United States: The Intersection of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation (Rowman, 2017), won a 2017 GLMA Achievement Award.
You and your partner/s have searched high and low for that ‘unicorn’: A relationship therapist of color who is warm, active, takes an intersectional, anti-oppressive approach AND has extensive experience working with and writing about queer, trans, and intersex people of color (QTIPOC).
You have found her!
Get ready to work with someone who not only has over thirty years’ experience, but also believes we can be transformed through our relationships.
As a Black lesbian, I focus on the needs of QTIPOC and their partners because I know that our romantic and sexual relationships can be refuges and places of healing in a world where our identities, our Selves, and our communities are constantly challenged and threatened by legal and physical violence. I am dedicated to supporting our relationships so that we can live the most fulfilling lives possible. A life filled with love, joy, and ease is our birthright.
I vividly remember being in couples’ therapy in the early 2000s with older, white, heterosexual woman and feeling so unseen and unheard. I realized that our options for finding a queer therapist of color with several years of experience were slim and settled with that therapist. I resolved to make sure that I would be a resource for QTIPOC who need to work with someone with a shared lived experience. As a result, I have gone through all three levels of training in The Gottman Method and have also been trained in EMDR with couples. This training guides my capacity to provide the type of client-centered therapy that you seek.
